I can't concentrate if there is no noise, ie T.V.
If I turn the T.V. off or radio to work on the computer and to write I can only concertrate for about 10 mins then I have to stand up walk around and come back to it. I have recently been diagnosed with post traumatic stress but i never thought I had a problem concentrating. Is this normal? I know Wayne Rooney can't sleep if the hoover isin't turned on but I didn't think I was that bad!

If there's no noise i go to sleep. It's the only way to relax. I can read a paper and listen to the radio at the same time. The only way to concentrate for me is to tell myself to concentrate. Not that it helps because i get all restless then.
Never been diagnosed with PTSD and neither will i cause i got a lousy GP that i avoid like the plague.
There's a brilliant book on trauma. Its called The Body Bears The Burden. Very technical though but it helped me understand me a little bit more

Scientist have proved that if you play classical music in the background when studying (or doing writing work etc.) your ability to concentrate increases tremendously. I don't know why it's got to be classical music but it is true. I tried all sorts of background noises and music for my study and classical music was the best. I don't think you have a problem, you just want something comforting and familiar in the background when you are alone. If you go high up in mountains away from motorways or other people then you can really appreciate the silence. You would find yourself listening to the silence and you wouldn't find yourself distracted all the time. It is quite peaceful. But of course, we don't get that because there's always a dog barking, a car driving by, kids screaming etc. I hope you will beat your post traumatic stress disorder successfully.

Both my sons need 'noise' to concentrate. They have their iPods these days, but when they were younger, it was radio or TV. I don't know whether it is the way that particular age group was taught, that has anything to do with it. Group work, constant discussions, a continual buzz of chatter, while they were working in class? I'm from a far distant dynasty where we were sat in long rows on benches, and if you talked you died a slow and painful death! Hence, to concentrate, I have to be in total silence (the only sound at the moment is the humming of my refrigerator - and that's driving me nuts!).

I too have this problem, I can never concentrate without music or background noise. It made doing my exams a nightmare and when I used to work cleaning holiday cottages and caravans I always ended up singing out loud to provide some noise (to the annoyance of my colleagues). I've never heard of anything that helps, I can't even go on my computer at home without music on.

My boyfriend is exactly the same, he needs some back ground noise to help him feel relaxed. It is not at all unusual, and it is the same for babies as adults. One recommended way of relaxing a baby is to play 'white noise', the noise that you get when the TV isn't tuned into a channel and is just buzzing.

If some back ground noise helps you concentrate and relax, then don't worry - just do what you need to do!

of course it is normal. There is never a point in someones life where everything is completely silent!( unless they are deaf, and even then they still have some sort of sound, vibrations)

In the womb, you can hear a heart beat, blood passing, breathing allsorts, that why hoovers are comforting to babies.
I know that if I had complete silence, I would go crazy, well I often talk to myself as acomfort if im alone

I used to have to have my tv or radio on to study - otherwise I would be reading and 'daydreaming'. When I was done reading I didn't have a clue what I just read. Never been diagnosed with post tramatic stress or anything but do have high anxiety.

I have a similar problem, I find it hard to sleep unless I hear a hairdryer for about five minutes in the room next door before I sleep. I dont think its at all harmfull just a bit odd.

Well i know someone like this, she cant even sit down for ten mins without needing to get up and mess around. Her attention span is virtually non-existent, having said that this has only happened since she became an Airhostess......

Jesus is the Answer to all our life problems. Why not try Him?

In the Beginning God created heavens and earth.
God gives you air to breathe and sunshine to enjoy.
God gives you water to drink and food to eat.
God gives you a wonderful body and sound mind, to live.
God loves you, and you are precious to Him.
Son of God died on the Cross to save us from condemnation.
Jesus’ love is boundless and everlasting.
We have the hope of Heaven through Jesus.
Life therefore has fantastic and glorious future!
(Digestion of above can even prevent depression and suicidal thoughts.)
