Two totally different potatoes! The "sweet potatoe" is a white potatoe shaped simular to the yam however, very different in texture and taste!
The "yam" is a bronze/orange colored potatoe, very sweet , stringy texture, great for carmelization, and is commonly used in the dish refered to as "sweet potatoes"!

Sweet potatoes and yams are two different vegetables. The paler-skinned sweet potato has a thin, yellow skin with pale yellow flesh and is not sweet. It has a dry, crumbly texture much like the white potato. The darker-skinned variety has a thicker, dark orange to reddish skin, sweet flesh and moist texture.

Yams are generally sweeter than sweet potatoes and can grow over seven feet in length. It has a brown or black and off-white, purple or red flesh. Yams contain more natural sugar than sweet potatoes and have a higher moisture content.

Sweet potatoes are of 2 different types: the dry-fleshed variety and moist-fleshed variety commonly marketed as yams. Genuine yams are only grown in the tropics. The dry-fleshed sweet potato has yellow fawn-colored skin and yellow-orange pulp. The moist-fleshed yams are sweeter and more popular. The skin is orange, pale rose, or copper red; the pulp is orange to red.
