Recurrent attacks can be avoided by maintaining a healthy weight and limiting the intake of purinerich foods. A diet high in fiber and low in fat is also recommended. Processed foods should be replaced by complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains. Protein intake should be limited to under 0.8g/kg of body weight per day.

My Dr. diagnosed gout 10 years ago and i was put on tablets which he said I would have to take for life. At the time I had similar bad bouts like you are going through. I also had varying success with different tablets, so see your Dr. to make sure your on the best ones for your condition. After about 4 years the gout disappeared with help of a change in eating /drinking habits it hasn't come back. See your Dr. again

Fatty foods! Stay away from red meat for awhile. Her's a little secret for you...a tsp. of baking soda in a glass of water, every 6 hrs for acute attacks! The baking soda helps your liver and kidneys flush the built up uric acid in your blood, which is what caused your gout. If you have high blood pressure though, you must be careful about trying that since it is a form of salt. And, gout can be a side effect of some blood pressure meds...it's a viscious cycle.

Gout diet

Alcohol, especially beer, should be avoided. Limit alcohol consumption to 1 drink 3 times a week.

Drink 2 to 3 L of fluid daily. Adequate fluid intake helps dilute urinary uric acid.

Consume a moderate amount of protein. Limit meat, fish and poultry to 4 - 6 oz per day. Try other low-purine good protein foods such as low fat dairy products, tofu and eggs.

Limit fat intake by choosing leaner meats, foods prepared with less oils and lower fat dairy products.

Avoid High-Purine foods:

Sweetbreads
Anchovies
Sardines
Liver
Beef kidneys
Brains
Meat extracts (e.g Oxo, Bovril)
Herring
Mackerel
Scallops
Game meats
Gravy
