I have just received my new car which has an aux socket ( rather like a jack point NOT usb ) for connecting external equipment such as mp3/ Laptop. There is no mention of type of lead in manufacturers handbook. can anyone help.

It probably is an audio stereo input (3.5 mm) socket so you can play audio CD players or mp3 players through your car radio speakers. The safest thing to do is ask a dealer for that model car. I have found the personnel at Radio Shack and Auto Zone stores very helpful.

Is it a 3.5mm audio jack?

Can't really tell you what lead you need without knowing what you want on the other end and a better description of this socket.

sure it's not a "cigarette lighter" type socket? This type of socket is fitted in many European cars to provide auxiliary power.
