17 hours is a very long time to be under anaesthetic. General anaesthetic carries risks with every one given, the risks are increased by several other factors including age, level of fitness e.g. heart/lung problems, smoking, obesity and length of time under anaesthetic. The longer you are under, the higher the risk of complications post-op. If your dad is otherwise fit and well he should be pretty much ok as long as he's up and about - the main complications arise from prolonged immobility. This can happen even after a short anaesthetic. He should be given compression stockings to wear and a daily heparin injection to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and should also be taught some deep breathing exercises to prevent chest infection. The nurses will be observing him closely for any complications, so try not to worry.

That sounds nasty. He was probably under so long as they tried to repair everything as best they could. The kength of anaesthetic should have no longterm ill effects on him. He will be very groggy after it and it may affect - decrease his appetite. Otherwise recovery should be normal, though painful. He will probably need physiotherapy to regain the use of his injured hand. He will need alot of support too after losing too fingers. Best of luck and hope he recovers well.

Not a lot, he would be under better care during the op than he will be when he is on the ward.
Sorry to hear about the accident.

If he was otherwise in good health, probably no ill affects. Nowadays anesthesiologists are well trained and monitor vital functions closely adjusting the anesthesia meds accordingly. I wouldn't worry about it.
