I have a dog that has been sweet up until the past couple of days. When we pet him, he growls and tries to bite. Anyone have a similar situation or suggestion? I'd hate to put him down, but I don't want anyone to get hurt. Thanks.

First, get him checked out by the vet-may have an ear infection or something hurting him. Sudden change indicates another problem.

Forst off have the vet do a thorough exam to rule out pain or any physical causes.
Then if that comes out all ok find a behavioral trainer and have them eveulate the dog. HAve them come into the home and work one on one with you and the dog and see what excatly is going on and how and when. It will help them to know better what needs to be done.
It is possible that the dog should be put down for safetys sake but more than likey it is a some type of behavioral issue and it can be resolved.
Good luck.

FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE TAKE HIM TO THE VET

The most common reasons for a dog getting cranky is that their are ill or in pain!

"I'd hate to put him down" - BECAUSE HE IS FEELING CRANKY you want to KILL him?????????????

If he isn't ill, have you EVER HEARD OF TRAINING ?????

Here is an idea, lets strangle whatever dreadful little monsters you have produced when the brats talk back.

AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE SAYING ABOUT THE DOG!!!

Now you - you to understand how animals communicate and him to learn to trust you when he is feeling ill or in pain or out of sorts - both need a GOOD obedience class - and that is NOT Petsmart or Petco.

GO here to find contacts in you area that can help you locate and obedience trainer who works with all breeds and who does AKC obedience competitions competing at what they claim to teach – no proof of ability like winning:

Even it they are an hour or more away, they will know other people all over the state.

take him to the vet. Maybe he is hurting somewhere. Take my dog. He was found on a freeway (interstate) and even after his stitches healed (he was hit by a car and had mange and fleas) he wouldn't let people come near his head because of a bad ear infection he was still recovering from.

(the info above came from his rescuer and Nevada County animal shelter)

Now he is the sweetest thing.

I would need more info to help you.

Is he eating the same?
How about drinking? Is there a dramatic increase or decrease?
Is he an indoor or outdoor dog?
How old is he?
Is he neutered?
How long have you had him?

Please visit my website and email me from there. I can probably help.

You might want to have him looked over by a vet to be sure there are not medical or health problems.

He may be ill or in pain. this is often a dogs reaction to pain. My previous dog only reacted this way when she was sick. Its very hard to tell when an animal is in pain, and they are usually quite tough. Get the vet to check him out.

You need to ask yourself - has anything changed in his world - and I mean anything.
Next, how old is he? If he's 8 years old or more, you need to consider Cushing's - it can drastically changed an animal's personality.

If you rule out any non-physical reasons for his behavior, take him to the vet for a checkup. It sounds like it could be a physical problem to me.
