If the plates were the same colour you wouldn't know it was coming towards you ar going away from you, hence different colours front and back

Not sure but I think is it is because the numbers being black are best read against a white background but the white causes reflection from the headlights of a following car so yellow is the next best thing

I think even at a distance it helps the driver to see whether the can in front is going away from him/her or going towards him/her.
The second reason is at night when the car behind shines the headlights yellow means caution and don't reflect as much light as white.

The official answer is that you can tell from the colour of the plate if the vehicle is approaching or departing.
Personally I would look to see if it was getting bigger/smaller than trying to remember what plate was at the front/back

Before this they were black with refective letters (Silver)
In Ireland the plates were red at the back instead of yellow so I would go for the comming at you or running away explanation.

l was told it was so that you knew from a distance if the car in front was facing you or driving away from you.l believed that for years but now l think about it that's prob rubbish,maybe a was having a blonde moment when l was told this,but it might be true!!!

So there isn't so much glare from the plate when you drive up behind at night with your lights on.
