Bottom line is you don't. first the information is restricted, and the general public can't get it by asking. Secondly, some people will keep their tag (especially in the case of vanity plate) when they trade a vehicle and put it on the new one, so the same plate could have been on a variety of vehicles with different VIN.
By the way, minor point here: VIN is "Vehicle Identification Number" so saying VIN number is somewhat redundant.

The VIN number is right on the vehicle. As far as obtaining it from a "tag" you don't unless you are law enforcement!
Why do people continuously ask this question? I have seen three already today! License plate information is NOT public information! It's there simply for citizens to identify a vehicle to law enforcement for further investigation-nothing more!

No, that's no longer the VIN. inspect your registration selection plate. The selection it is on your registration selection plate is the tag selection. Yours could be a mix of letters and numbers. occasion ABC123
