Maqbool Fida Husain, (born September 17, 1915, Pandharpur) popularly known as M F Husain, is a well known Indian artist. After a long, sucessful and largely uncontroversial career, his work became enmeshed in violent religious controversy in the late 1990s, to such extent that he was forced to leave India because of threats to his life.
Early years
Husain comes from a Muslim Indian family. His mother died when he was one and a half years old. His father remarried and moved to Indore, where Husain went to school. In 1935, he moved to Bombay and was admitted to the Sir J. J. School of Art. He started off by painting cinema hoardings. He was a struggling artist until his paintings were first exhibited in Bombay.[citation needed] He first became well-known as an artist in the late 1940s. In 1947, he joined the Progressive Artists Group, a clique of young artists who wished to break with the nationalist traditions established by the Bengal school of art and to encourage an Indian avant-garde, engaged at an international level. In 1952, his first solo exhibition was held at Zürich and over the next few years, his work was widely seen in Europe and USA.
In 1966, he was awarded the prestigious Padma Shree prize by the Government of India. He has also been awarded the Padma Bhushan. In the following year, he made his first film, Through the Eyes of a Painter. It was shown at the Berlin Film Festival and won a Golden Bear

MF Hussain is an artist who is recognised in India & abroad. he is an Indian. but what u have wrong is that he paints nudes. he is recognised by the horses that he has drawn.
whether he is as good as Da Vinci depends on individual likings. every individual has a different likin of an artist & it becomes difficult to compare when they belong to different periods & their styles are different too.

m.f Hussain is an over rated Indian painter, he is also a filmmaker two films old,his movies were as boring and senseless as his paintings
some years back he admitted that he like Madurai Dixit, a bollywood actress very much and is crazy about her. This statement got him a lot of publicity in bollywood too, then he made a movie gajagamini with her which was a flop.
he has proved that he has no respect for Hindu religion. and a man who cannot respect ones religion or dare to insult god n goddesses, cannot be a true artist...art is form of expressing your feelings, views and this sick man has shown his dirty mind thru this medium.he is just famous becoz of his abnormal behaviour i guess he loves this kind of negative publicity.please dont compare him with DA vinci

Looks like there are a lot of people here who talk a lot about subjects that they don't understand.
1. MF Hussain is an artist. You may or may not like his style of art- but that art- it's very personal
2. He is among the most famous, respected, and well paid artists all over the world
3. He is a film-maker who has made movies such as Gajagamini and Meenaxi- again based on art- you may like it or not- it's just his personal expression
4. He is eccentric as are all artists
My verdict- I respect him as an artist and film-maker. I do not like his form of painting, but that doesn't say he's not talented- he is great, just a difference in tastes. Meenaxi was absolutely brilliant and I admire him for that.
Keep an open mind folks- be proud of the unique and creative few in the world
