The question would depend somewhat on context. Depiction of the prophet Mohamed in any visual form is considered a high desecration of God. What ocurred, in response throughout most of the Islamic world, was a tradition of creating text that was highly aesthetic (Arabic Calligraphy.) But, the rules of depiction of images differs from one place to another within the Islamic world. For example, photographs of people of the Islamic faith appear everywhere - on CD covers, newspapers, film. The extent that one chooses to be portrayed in photographs extends more to personal choice and his or her own concept of sacredness. In other words, one may be Muslim and not necessarily feel the need to hide his or her image in the process. Other Muslims, considering the issue as it relates to Mohamed, follow tradition that dissuades the use of the human images.

I think you question needs to take into account that there are many levels of devotion and interpretation concerning the issue of human images.
