I think golf is the most difficult 'sport' to understand. What's the best way to learn?

The scoring system for golf is actually very simple.

Each hole on every course is given a "par" score..in other words the number of shots it should take you to get your ball from the tee to the hole. The par for a hole depends on its length and difficulty.

A "bogie" is the par score for a hole plus one..so if you take 5 shots on a par 4 hole, thats a bogie..and thats not good!

A "birdie" is the par score for a hole minus one..so if you only take 3 shots on a par 4 hole, that's a birdie...and that's good!

The winner is the golfer who take the fewest shots to go round all 18 holes on a course.

The best way to learn is to play, or just watch the big tournaments on the TV. You will soon pick it up.

On a golf course there are par 3,4 and 5. A birdie is when u shoot one under that par- for ex.: 2 on a par 3, 3 on a par 4 and 4 on a par 5. a bogey is when you shoot one over the par. 4 on par 3 etc. There r also double bogies( 5 on a par 3) triple bogies( 6 on a par 3) and others such as snowmans(8) and hockey sticks(7). Hopefully this will help u out.

Bogies are bad and Birdies are good. I had one birdie today and many bogies: that's usaully happens when I don't have much sleep and play golf th next day.
Well, a par is how many times you supposed to hit the ball and get it into the hole of that particularly hole: There are par 3, par 4 and par 5 (that is 3 times, 4 times and 5 times). A bogie is you hit one too many time for the hole, and a birdie is on less time for the hole; i.e. 2 times for par 3 is birdie and 4 times for par 3 is one bogie. Got it?

a bogie is 1 over par, double bogie is 2 over par, a birdie is 1 under par, an eagle is 2 under par, and par is the number of hits a good golfer should make it into the hole
to learn golf, you should get a teacher , but a book, or look on the internet

A Birdie is one shot under par and a Bogie is one shot over par. As to golf is difficult to understand then you must
Take yourself off to the local golf club and pay for a bucket of balls, stand in the driving range and hit the balls down the range. This will help you to start to swing the clubs and hit the balls correctly, then whilst you are there talk to the player next to you and see what happens. You can pick up all sorts of tips if you are willing to listen to another player and it will cost you nothing. You can then take these tips and start to use them on the driving range or if you feel confident enough take them onto the course itself and use what you have learnt to play the game as this is the best way to learn the game there is, by actually Playing the game. If you get stuck you can contact me here or directly as I am the editor of East Anglian Golfer magazine. The website is the same name just add .com instead of magazine but put it all together in one word.(lowercase letters)

The most difficult sport to understand is American Football... 1st and Down, 3rd and 10 etc etc?!?!?

Golf isn't too bad, it works on a par system. Par is how many shot's it should take to complete a hole, i.e a par 3 hole is quite a short game, where as a par 5 game will take longer.

For example, your on a par 3 hole and you get the ball in in 2 shots that will be a Birdie but if it takes you 4 shots to get it in the hole it will be a Bogie.

I hope this helps, the best way to learn is to go to your local course and have a game

A bogey is nowadays the name given to a score that is one over Par . A birdie is the name given to a score that is one under par. The number of strokes a good player is expected to complete a particular hole in was originally termed the bogey of a hole, but this has now been replaced by the name par, When the Americans started playing golf they began using the term bogey for scores over par and the idea spread back to the UK.

Each hole on the golf course is allocated a par, in other words the number of shots you should take to complete the hole. It works on the basis of the number of shots it should take you to reach the green, and then an allowance of two putts once on the green. Hence a Par 3, you should be on the green in one, and then two putts to complete the hole. A Par 4, two shots to the green, two putts to complete the hole. The longest par you can get in a game of golf is a Par 6, but there aren't many of these. A bogey is one shot over par, and birdie is one shot under par. Continuing the theme ... a double bogey is two shots over, an eagle is two shots under, an albatross is three shots under.

If you have a handicap of - let's say 18 - then you are allowed one extra shot per hole. So, for example if you complete a Par 4 hole in 5 shots you have, in effect, scored a net par. If you complete it in 4, you've scored a net birdie.

As to the best way to learn - get yourself a good golf pro to teach you the basics and then play as much as you can to get your handicap down. The more you play - the better you become - but don't forget to have periodic lessons as it's very easy to lapse into bad habits.

A bogie is simply one over par for any hole and a birdie is simply one under par for any hole. If 4 strokes = Par then 3 strokes is birdie. If 4 strokes = Par then 5 strokes is bogey.
