I'm going to be in San Juan on Sunday for a long layover-- between 9am and about 4pm.

Any suggestions for what to do during that time? I obviously have to be back at the airport in time for my flight, but would like to do more than stare at the wall for 7 hours.

Does anybody know of any tours or anything else worth going to within that time frame? Specific names, links, phone numbers, etc would be great.

Thanks!

Take a taxi over to Old San Juan and just wander around the cobblestone streets; it's a beautiful area. Check out the Fortress (El Morro) too. Great way to spend a day.

I am from San Juan. All you have to do in get a San Juan City map or ask people in the streets for directions to Hard Rock Cafe, The Pigeon Park, Capital Building and Paseo de la Princesa. You can get on the horse carriage near the ports. A trip around the city can cost you 45-50 dollars but it is worth the trip. There are many stores to shop at like: Coach, Ralph Lauren and Puerto Rican shops. If you want to stay around the airport area go to Lupis Mexican Restaurant, and check out the San Juan Hotel and Casino. If not go to Old San Juan.
If you want to go further you can go to Condado Plaza also. But if I were you (with your 9-4 schedule) stick to Old San Juan. You should wear sneakers and a cap. It is around upper 90 degrees everyday.

Just take a taxi to Old San Juan ($25) and ask him to drop you off at La Casita Tourism Information Center (787-722-1709) at Plaza Darsenas next to Pier 1. They can give you a map for a walking tour that you can do by yourself and at your own pace. It will have all the attractions and a route to get to most of them. There are museums, old forts (El Morro and San Cristobal), the governor's house (La Fortaleza, they have a tour available), great shopping and restaurants. Also you can take the ferry at pier 1 for $0.50 it will take you to the Bacardi Rum Distillery where they have a free tour and free samples. Everything in Old San Juan is in walking distance, if you get tired there is a free trolley. Old San Juan is about 10-15 mins away from the airport and there are always plenty of taxis at both places. I would recommend you to head back to the airport at least 2 1/2 hrs before your flight.

www.shoretrips.com
www.bookexcursions.com

are two websites that you can use, or you can do it yourself - if your an explorer type.

My wife and I have don it several times, and have never had a bad experience. Jump in a cab at the airport and ask the driver to take you to the "old city" - great shopping, cafes, sights, sounds, and smells. Then jump on a bus for a very short ride to "El Morro" fortress - built in 1591 - it is the symbol of Puerto Rico.

Enjoy and have a good tour, which ever way you decide to go!

what you want to do is to go into the old city. there is plenty to do there. You can take a $20 cab ride one way its about a 15 minute drive or you could check other options at www.puertoricoplanner.com click on sightseeing and then on expert.
