Your local RSPCA or SPCA will probably be able to get him neutered for a lot cheaper than what a vet would do it for.
At 2 years, he should have had almost all his shots by now. You will need all the vaccination certificates from the person your boyfriend bought the dog from. You will also need ALL of these vaccination certificates if you need to board your dog for a few days.
Good choice on not breeding your Golden. There are far too many dogs being euthanized each day because people are breeding dogs for money and do not care where the pups go.

You don't need papers to register him for a license, shots or neutered. Check with your local SPCA or ASPCA to see about inexpensive shots and neutering. Get a letter from the former owner stating that she gave or sold the dog to your BF. No, they can't take the dog away from you because you don't have the registration papers. Get him neutered for sure if you don't plan to breed him. Also, get him checked for parasites and heart worm. MAKE SURE YOU GET SOMETHING IN WRITING FROM THE FORMER OWNER THAT THE DOG IS NO LONGER HERS BEFORE YOU NEUTER HIM!!!.
Good luck.

Contact your local SPCA or Humane Society, they often offer little or no cost spay/ neuter programs. Your vet should also be able to refer you. PetSmart stores often have rescue organizations that have adopt-a-thons, some of them may have a list of discounted or free spay/ neuter programs for your area. They won't take him away from you if you're taking good care of him; you're obviously a good pet mom. They'll just do new documentation for him when he gets his shots. The previous owner's vet should have a chart established, so you should be able to get a copy from him/ her. Just explain the situation when you take him in, they'll understand.

talk to your vet or animal control in your area. Many areas have low cost spay and neuter programs and low cost immunization clinics. Also talk to the area petstores. Papers only show if they are purebred or not. If there is some extreme neglect or signs of extreme abuse they may take him, but not because you got him from someone w/o papers

if you live in Los Angeles California you can contact the "Actors and Others for Animals".
http://www.actorsandothers.com/spayneuterhelp.html
If you qualify you may receive financial assistance in spay/neuter your pet program . If you don't live in California i would recommend you contact your local pet shop, humane society and or the ASPCA and see what programs are available in your area. I'm so glad that you care so much about animals. I, like yourself, care very much about animals.
good luck to you.

You do not need to have any paperwork to see a vet or go to a spay/neuter clinic.
They just take your word that you own the animal.

http://www.friendsofanimals.org for low cost neuter certificate
Papers do not mean anything....they won't take your dog.
I'm glad you chose not to breed. The shelters are over run and so many dogs, cats, even puppies and kittens are put to death daily.
