Potential energy is stored energy. Once you'll know the potential energy of things, you can make use of this in many applications. It just like knowing your potential to burp many times, you'll show this off to your friends to be cool. Or knowing the potential of your dog to bark and bully someone, you'll bring your dog to your enemies to scare them away!

On a more serious side, knowing the potential energy of your food (through calories content) will let you know how much energy can you get if you are going to eat them. So, when you are going to have lots of physical activities, you are going to eat these energy giving foods to keep you going.

A bucket of water standing on top of a door waiting for an unsuspecting victim! Is really potential energy! The only problem is! it's taken energy to place it up there!!! A piece of coal is potential energy, wood! A nuclear device! an atom! everything that is not releasing energy is classed as potential energy! All matter is potential energy! Remember Einsteins equation! Energy=mass multiplied by the speed of light squared! He's actually saying that the whole universe is potential energy! Because it's composed of mass. I hope this helps you!

Potential energy is the ability to work. For example you raise a rock you store potential energy in it you let it drop on a shell it does work it might break the shell! All fossil fuel has potential energy, every elevated thing has potential energy and so on.
Normally we say work=kinetic energy+ potential energy

Potential energy is the energy stored in the body by the position of it's virtue.

consider this:
when you put a stone on a roof top, it has some energy. when you throw the stone on the ground, you hear a sound(sound energy). here the sound energy came from the potential energy you gave to the stone when you put the stone on the roof top.
if you measure the temp. of the ston before and after the fall, there will be some elevation. in order to feel this, throw from a good height.

Potential Energy is energy stored by virtue of position.if we compress a spring we are storing energy and so when we release it it can do work.if we take an object to a height we are storing energy and so when we drop it it can do work.
chemical energy is a also a type of potential energy.the fat stored in the body is also potential energy which can be converted into kinetic energy and so on

1. Check this out first. It's a real photo we have of the beginning of the Universe:
http://www.princeton.edu/pr/pwb/03/0217/
2. The "light" in that photo is pure energy.
3. Tiny bundles of energy called photons zoom in waves. (electromagnetic spectrum).
4. When two or three zooming photons come together, they form a little shimmering called a "particle of matter". (electron, neutron, proton)
5. Those particles of matter can come together in families called "atoms"
6. Atom families that are the same can come together and form elements (such as hydrogen, oxygen, helium, ect.)
7. Elements can come together and form compounds.
8. Compounds can come together and form organic compounds.
9. Organic compounds can come together into forms capable of consciousness and possessing senses.
10. Everything that is "matter" is made of tiny bundles of energy called "photons", including you.
11. When photons "untangle", they zoom away in waves again.
12. When photons are tangled into matter, we call that "potential" energy.
13. When we burn wood, for example, we are untangling the photons and letting them fly free. We refer to that as releasing potential energy.
14. Energy can come together as matter and then matter can come untogether and be energy again. That what E=MC2 means.

Hope that helps.
