A severe toothache could indicate an abscess. People die every year with an untreated abscess. I would go to the ER and have someone take a look. You may need antibiotics.

I am in the process of a horrible toothache myself but you can lessen the pain by taking a couple of tylonal (or advil, asparin, whatever you use for headache or pain. brew a cup of tea (Good strong tea, leave the tea bag in) slowly drink the tea holding the tea in your mouth a few secounds before swollowing, this is as good, in my opinion as the warm salt water remedy, which is also good. you can also take the tea bag out of the water and squeeze the excess water out and place the tea bag directly on the troubled tooth, there is something in tea, tannic acid that toughens up the gums and acts like a "number" you can also take an asparin and place it on the tooth too., until it desolves. It helps to be in a reclined position , prop your head up with pillows , make sure , even though it may hurt, to brush your teeth softly and use a full strength antiseptic mouth rinse several times a day to keep bacteria out of the sore tooth. avoid any cold drinks. even breathing with your mouth open can cause the tooth to throb with the intake of air. I sympathize with you, and believe me I tried it all . If you want to resort to an over the counter remedy Oragel medicated toothache swabs have given me relief too, they look like cotton buds(Q-tips) you snap the tip off and swab the other end that has a measured amount of novocaine in it to the bad tooth , good luck.

Our family always used the warm salt-water rinse. Add 2 Tbsp of salt to 1 cup of hot tap water. Get the water just as hot as you can stand it, dissolve the salt in the water. Take a mouthful and swish it around your mouth for several seconds. Spit it out and take another mouthful, repeat. Do not swallow the mixture. When all the salt water is gone you may want to rinse your mouth out with a swish of warm water to get rid of the salty taste.
Repeat the salt-water rinse every two-four hours until you can get to the dentist.
The following tips were found online:
Chew cloves or rub clove oil on the tooth.
Peel and crush a clove of fresh garlic and mix it with peanut butter. Apply it to the aching tooth and keep it there for some time.
Add some lime juice to asafetida (hing) powder. Soak a piece of cotton and hold it on the tooth and gum.
Mix 1 tablespoon of common salt with 1/2 cup of boiling water. Take a mouthful of this water and move it around the aching tooth.
Burn some turmeric (haldi) sticks, make a fine powder and use as toothpowder.
Chew a clove slowly with the aching tooth/teeth to release its juice and leave there for half an hour. Repeat 2-3 times.
Chew a ginger piece slowly with the aching tooth/teeth to release its juice and leave there for half an hour. Repeat 2-3 times.
Drink the juice of 2-3 star fruit twice a day to get relief from the tooth pain.
Boil 5 gram of peppermint and a pinch of salt in 1 cup of water. Drink it to relieve toothache and other pains. You can use peppermint mouthwash.
Pour a few drops of Vanilla extract on the paining tooth.
Pour a few drops oil of oregano on the paining tooth or gum.
Gargle with Listerine Antiseptic.
Good luck!
Chew a piece of ice on the side of your mouth that is aching/paining.

Clove oil is the best home remedy for toothaches. Even dentists use it. I found the information at

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING ON.....toothache's dont go away. If you have an abcess, your face and other areas will swell. Its an infection. A serious infection. Not something i would play with. You need to go to a dentist pronto.

Clove oil, one or two drop relieves the pain.
Otherwise, take a very sweet or salty stuff and gurgle it. Effect however may be temporary. Clove oil is the best.
Medicine - aspirin, advil or tylenol will work just fine.

Sounds like you just need to pull the tooth. The tooth could be rotten, it could have a hole in it, could have a cavity. I know dentists are expensive and you probably don't have insurance, but you need to go see a dentist. See if they can work with you, and let you make payments to them or something.

Use clove oil, apply it on the offending tooth it works. If it is the 3rd molar then try chewing gum from that side.

Pinch the skin between your thumb and index finger. It's a pressure point.
