Are you suggesting that the people always spoke in rhyme or hasn't your teacher explained that Chaucer as a poet and story teller and that he told his stories in rhyme.

Is rhyming a new thing then? Many people in Chaucer's day couldn't read or write so their verbal skills were probably a lot more advanced. Most information was passed on by word of mouth rather than any other way so maybe it was through the constant practice.

They could read French and they learned it from such works as Romant de la Rose, a work which had a profound influence on Chaucer, who in fact translated it into English. People had been using rhyme for a long time.

Just think how Neanderthals may have rhymed, with their wider vocal range and better hearing !

There were rhymes in the bible - such as the song of Solomon.
The Romans, Greeks, Celts, practically everyone had rhymes - most history was passed down in rhyme, because it is much easier to remember associations.

Robert Graves' "The White Goddess" has a lot of information about early historical rhymes.

That question is in danger of sounding patronising! Just as well they're all dead and gone, or they'd be deeply insulted!!
; )

They KNEW how to rhyme the same way everyone 'finds out'! They - or someone with them - say something, and it RHYMES! It sounds good, so it's repeated as a novelty - hey presto, rhyming is created as a form of entertainment!

BTW, Chaucer was around a little LATER than Neanderthal man ...
