My engagement ring is an eternity style band of fire opals, which are my favourite stones, I know it's not traditional but that's what my b/f picked out, and I love it. However, I have had a few negative comments about it and have even been told that opals are for tears, or are bad luck, I just wondered if anyone else has heard this before? It won't change how I feel about my ring, as I love it, and he could not have chosen better.

Congratulations!
Pearls are for tears.
depends how superstitious you are!
opal is supposed to be lucky only if its your birth stone (October)
personally i love opals and have earrings and a ring in different colours....(black, blue & opaque)and yes i was born in October!!
In Roman times the gem was carried as a good luck charm or talisman, as it was believed that the gem, like the rainbow, brought its owner good fortune. It was also referred to as the “Cupid stone” because it suggested the clear complexion of the god of love.
In the 7 th century it was believed that opals possessed magical properties and centuries later Shakespeare was attributed with the description of opal as “that miracle and queen of gems”.
The Arabs believed that they fell from the sky and the Orientals referred to them as “the anchor of hope”. Lucky opal – the stone of hope, the birthstone of October.

I remember when I was a little girl, my grandmother used to tell me the same thing about opals being bad luck. Apparently, whenever she would see an opal (she lived near and opal mining area as a little girl), she would pick it up and throw it away. Personally, I adore opals. And I've always thought my gran was a bit of a loon in this respect. You're the first person I've ever heard (since my grandmother) who even has heard of this crazy superstition. The only reason I could think that opals would be considered "bad luck" is because the mining process to extract them can be really dangerous. It's not like you find opals in fast running streams or washed up on the shore. You have to blast them out of the bedrock. So maybe that's behind the superstition. But I don't really know. I just think it's a stupid superstition. So if anyone is crazy scared of opals... send them to me. I love them :)

Some people say that opals are bad luck if they're not your birth stone, which is where the bad luck thing came from. But opals were considered really good luck in ancient times.

I've heard that too - once an old friend had received an opal engagement ring. Do you believe in all the superstitious stuff? If you love the ring forget what people might say to you. Would you not drive a green car because they are supposed to be bad luck? Do you stay in bed on Friday 13th?

Dongratulations. Your ring sounds just fabulous and I would keep loving it if I were you. That is what matters and the love that it represents. Opal is my birthstone and I never heard any bad things associated with it. I don't think people should be filling your head with that stuff. They simply should be happy for you and admire your beautiful ring. My life has been full of ups and downs from an early age but I don't think it has anything to do with my birthstone opal. Best of luck and happiness to you both.

Congratulations on your engagement!
Shame on those who spoilt your pleasure and delight with negative comments! I can never understand people who do this. Even if it were true, which it is not, it is thoughtless at best and mean at worst.
Wear your ring with pride and joy, and forget the superstitious ear say. It is simply due to the fact that opals were much prized when they were dug out of the ground and some people committed crimes to get hold of the finds made by others.
Think about the fact that you have a fiance in a million who has exquisite taste and who, out of love for you, has chosen something so beautiful and out of the ordinary.
I had one single opal as an engagement ring and my mother-in-law, who did not want to lose her power over her son (only child!), told me exactly the same thing: "opals are for tears". We are coming up to our fortieth anniversary in three years time and have been very happy together. He still loves me to bits. We are best friends and can tell each other anything. We also have lovely children who, despite distance, keep in touch regularly. I really count my blessings and nobody has killed me for the ring!
I wish you every happiness!

As long as you like the ring then thats all that matters, and congrats on your engagement!
I also have heard that opals are bad luck but only if they crack. I have heard that opals are quite easy to fracture through a knock or extreme temperatures.
I still like em coz of all the colours you get from them. Good on your fella for not being traditional, some people have no imagination when it comes to engagement rings!

My Cousin had told me that years ago, but I love Fire Opals. Recently I was gifted with a Fire Opal antique necklace..I don't believe the "bad luck" theory. I will wear them & since I felt GREAT energy from them I know they were meant for me. My Birth stone is Amethyst, I believe Fire Opal is my inspirational stone
