Hiya I live in Thailand and am English, every English person entering Thailand is issued with a 30 day tourist visa when you pass through immigration on arrival at the Airport. So every 30 days you need to cross a border into a neighbouring Counrty I.E Burma,Cambodia,Laos,Malaysia depending on which one is closet to where you are in Thailand to renew your tourist visa.
I have a Non Immigrant class O Visa which I got from my local Thai Consulate in Hull which cost me 90 quid and lasts 1 year and allows me to stay for 90 days at a time rather than 30 days.
If your only staying for 3 months just use the Tourist Visa you get when you arrive in Thailand and travel to a border every 30 days its the best way and you get to see all the Beautiful sites on the way,The border run up the Mekhong river into Laos is mindblowing,I live in Chiang Mai in the North and go to the Mae Sai border in Burma, easy straight through turm around and enter Thailand again with a fresh stamp in my passport...
Enjoy your 3 months in the Land of Smiles

The current new government has clamped down on the so-called border run. Immigration may not give you a visa if you did not meet new criteria of leaving the kingdom for a certain period. It is best to check with a Thai consulate or embassy near you on the new regulations regarding visa for you. Seems like many did not know about the recent changes to the Thai visa rules effective 1 Oct 06.
So for your own peace of mind, check with the thai officials. You do get the free 30-day tourist pass on arrival. Then see how youcan extend it when you are there. This is one possible option. Otherwise you will have to get out country and re-enter after a stay in a third country.

If you apply in Advance a Thai embassy will issue with a 60 day visa. When this expires you can than do a visa run as described below. To get a visa for longer than 60 days you would need to be planning to study in Thailand or do business etc.

There are many things misunderstood about visas.
A visa is permission to enter a country. Its validity is nothing to do with how long you may stay. A visa valid for three months means you may enter any time in the next three monrhs.
The length of time you may stay depends on the type of visa.
A tourist visa will provide you with permission to stay for two months. You can then go to an immigration office in Thailand, and extend it for a further month. This will enable you to stay for the three months you require.
A non-immigrant visa is will gain you permission to stay for three months, and can be extended for a further month.
If you require to stay for longer than three months, then you must obtain a multiple entry visa, and leave the country after each stay of two or three months, and then return. You can exit at any of the eleven border crossings and return immediately.
If you have a British passport, I can strongly recommend using the Consulate in Hull, to which you can apply by post.

They make it easy to get a multiple entry non-immigrant visa.

The old 60 day tourist visa issued by a Thai consulate at home before coming has been replaced by 90 day tourist visa obtainable in the same way. Alternatively, you could do the border hopping thing to get a max of 90 days in any 6 month period. These and other methods are discussed in the artcle below:

Nowadays, it is not sure you can exit and re-enter Thailand to get another period os stay! On the contrary, this recent policy caused long lines of foreigners under that situation, at the borders, who have been refused to re-enter!!!! If you want to stay longer, ask the immigration service.

Be careful, the 30 day transit visa mentioned is issued on arrival and depends on the goodwill of the immigration officials to re-new, it is not officially re-newable and I have known cases where it has been refused. Check out the website above for the information and application forms.
