I think there is for covering the face in dusty desert areas I could see the point in it even in Egypt. my gran wore head scarfs in London for protection from wind now I would not because it would appear Muslim that is sad on my part but the way of the world.

There is practical reason for the coverings, both for the men and women. Go to military recruiting office and ask what are the rules for solders in Iraq, even when within a controlled area, like a base. They must keep their heads covered at all times, because solar radiation can heat up the human skull, both directly and reflected off the sands.
Covering the head, and body, with extra layers of fabric, keeps the person cooler. Another person to ask is why a farmer wears long underwear during the summer. Like the Arabs, the extra layers of fabric absorbs moister from the body. Air passing through the cloth than creates a cooling action. Of course, these days, farm tractors have air conditioned cabs, so the tradition of wearing long underwear in the summer has likely died out, though the Amish still practice it.

In Biblical times, in the religious communities, a woman was supposed to cover herself head to toe and she was not to expose even her hair to anyone other than her husband.
My only knowledge as to the modern tradition of such is from the book Not Without My Daughter, which is very informative as it was a firsthand account of an American woman held prisoner by her own husband in a Muslim area for several years. She mentions the same, that a woman must cover herself (the head and face mainly although the rest of the body they don't seem to care that much either way she said) except in the presence of her husband.

Possible explanations are; protection from the sun, and light loose fitting clothing that covers the body actually helps to keep you cool. (Strange but true). I think out side of religion the things you have listed are reasonable.

No. Women have always been protected from the elements by staying indoors. Captured enemies did the outside work. The Burka is a symbol of a prized possession, not a free human being.

My respected brother / sister, Head & body covering is the universal uniform of all respectable, pious & modest women. whether they are living is USA, UK, Israel or in Saudi Arbia u will find the same dress code. Have u ever seen RESPECTABLE MARRY in any picture with out head covering, have u seen any NUN whether they are living in Chilled countries or in middleeast they are weariing the same dress. Pls donot associate this dress code with muslims you will not find any difference b/w the dress of NUNS & Muslim women. In christian world the Dress code of Mother Marry is only adopted by NUNS while in musim world most of them observing the Dress Code of Mother Marry which is also ordered by Quran. Acutually All muslims respects Marry by heart that is why muslim women tries to copy her by wearing Scarf on their head & body covering. The naked society of Western countries are terrible now a days, just yesterday CNN reports that " In USA boy rapped her Mother " this is happening because we are not folliwng the real teaching of Marry & Jesus. May Allah help us to practice the teachings & character of Marry & Jesus. (protex75@yahoo.com)

No theres no practical reason for covering the head.
Infact its got nothing to do with how you express your religion even.
Its a duty for women who believe in God. And its a matter of faith that He desires it to be so.
