The question should rather be; styling cream or mousse/gel, as mousse and gel are virtually the same thing in different forms. Mousse is usually a little softer, though it depends on the product lines. A styling cream will give your curl shine and definition without being crunchy or sticky. It will give you 'run your fingers through your hair' hair.

I have straight hair on top and curly in back. I use mousse for the hair that is already curly. The hair on top that needs curled with a curling iron i use hairspray. Dry your hair hold up portion that is to be curled spray some hairspray on it, then curl with curling iron. holds the curl well. I use Rave 4.

Mousse, definitely. If you're not getting the results you want, try a different brand, I've found a big variation between them.
I still wish I had naturally straight hair though, using straightening irons isn't very kind to it :(

I wouldnt use either I purchased a curling aid solution from my hairdresser i works the best Gel is too heavy and gluggy if you put too much on
The mousse is too light and will not hol the curl in
