I agree that it is very rare to find a three colour or calico cat male cat & I've heard that you do get them when they have an extra X chromome ... as I believe that someone has already explained to you. Apparently, male calicos are very rare & invariable infertile ... or so I've heard.
However, there are other three coloured cats out there ...
This marble Bengal has three colours ... maybe even four, if he has a white belly.

because of genetics. The genes necessary to produce 3 colours (calico) are carried on the X chromosome. Without getting super-technical, in order for all 3 colours to be displayed in the fur, a cat needs some of the genes on one X chromosome, and some on the other X. This can only happen in female cats, as they (like human females) have 2 Xs. A male has one X and one Y.
The only way a male cat can be calico is if it has something genetically whacked-out with it, such as having 2 Xs and a Y, which although can happen, is exceedingly rare (as in humans).

Hi there...male tricolours or known as torties (tortoise shells) are rare, however they can be found if you keep patiently searching.
Consider posting an ad in one of the free online classifieds that you are looking for a male tortie/calico. They are out there...just be patient and also scour the ads daily too in hopes of finding one.

A calico coat is genetic. It's part of the female genes. You won't find a male calico as it's not in their genetic make up. It's been said that scientists are willing to pay unbelievable prices for anyone that finds a male calico.

It sounds like you are looking for a calico, and I am unsure of the reasons but most are female. It has something to do with the genetics and mutated genes. *shrug* HTH and good luck in finding out more, I know I read that little bit of info at least 10 years ago.

I am not a genetics person, but it is genetially impossible to find a three color calico male cat. If you find a fertile one call the press!
