The Holodeck is a reference to the Star Trek series. The holo deck is like the virtal reality tech we have now. It is an very advance form. They use it for rec or training. But it was a way to interact with the imigination and stories.. and etc.
The science have been working on interactive video games for years.. but most idea's have come from Gene Rodneybury and his lovely story's about space travel .ty gene.
I hope this helps.
ok. i found this i hope it might help. since you are not looking for sf

A room on the Star Trek's Starship Enterprise from the Next Generation series, where energy is converted to matter to simulate a make believe environment like acting out a scene from a book or to discuss physics with a simulated Albert Einstein.

This term is sometimes used in place of "sandbox" or "jail". A sandbox is a sort of operating system in an operating system. The program runs in this confined space, so any blow-ups will be confined. A sandbox or jail is a reproduction of the actual conditions the software will be run in (or is being run in.) It's also possible for a sandbox or jail to be completely separate (be run on a separate machine for instance.)

In short, you create an environment that is very much like the real one (but is not) and then you run your software in this environment. Then you throw stuff at it to see what breaks.

A holodeck is a room from star trek. As I understand it, it can create environments, items, people, or anything within the room.
