That depends really..
If you're looking to make money on it - restore..
If you're looking to have a bit of fun - modify
If you're looking to have fun, spend money - go all out get a porsche motor in the back - uprate suspension, brakes and the whole of the running gear..
It's really a matter of you deciding what kinda money you want to throw at it - and what you want to do with it.
A well restored beetle can be just as cool as a custom one.
I cant remember when they stopped doing the split rear window - but if you've found one of those you could be onto a winner as apparently they're quite rare.

When VW brought out the modern day beetle I didn't like it, but the beetles prior to this are a lovely car. Please restore it to its original spec, you will get much more admiration for your work. Not only that you will benefit fro restoring a classic car (By the way a classic car in the UK doesn't have to pay any road tax, but you have to display a tax disc just the same. A classic is a car of 25 years or more, and since your VW is of 1975 you qualify!).

I watched a restored 1978 VW Beetle Convertible sell at a dealer auction (just open to auto dealers, not the public) for over $7000 yesterday. A hardtop will not be worth that much, but if you have to skill to do a complete restoration, I would recommend that you do that, rather than modify the car. A modified car will have a lot less value!

I bought an MG Midget and am restoring it as I think it will be more satisfying, so I would recommend restoring to original.
The tunisianB above is wrong as not all cars are counted as classics only if they were built before 1972 so you will have to pay Roadtax although it is a lesser amount if it's 25yrs or older.
Enjoy the rebuild whatever you do and go to Ebay for spares.
Incredibly cheap for new parts.

Custom, if was an early Beetle, 50's or so, then yeah keep it original since they are rare and valuable, but a late one is quite ugly IMHO and not so collectable

customise is good ,but i think original is in for the next decade. with car manafactures trying to make space ships, to compete,a bit of original is nice for the eyes and soul.keep it original.
