I have always heard that it is a distraction and that you should not. If you choose to then you should choose classical.
HOWEVER... I prefer to study with music on. So while studies may say that it is better not to, I think that it really does depend on individuals. For me it was never a distraction. I did not get as distracted. I usually ended up tuning out the songs, but for some reason it seemed to help me get started.

Generally I would have to say no, but that doesn't stop me from doing it from time to time. I would assume that people should avoid music like hip-hop, rap, and anything that has lyrics in it while studying. Songs with lyrics definitely distract people because they are more likely to sing along rather than have their mind focused on the task at hand. They say classical music helps and I wouldn't doubt it, but the music should be at an ambient volume, nothing loud, just music being heard subtlety in the background.

I saw this on Dr. Phil one day b/c I have a problem focusing and all. But Dr. Phil wasn't the one giving advise, it was another doctor who wrote a book or w/e.
Anyways, they said it's good for a student to listen to music with a good beat before studying b/c it excites the brain/brain cells and helps them focus. He said a good example of this is band music. I think as long as the music has an obvious beat, like band music, it will be just fine.

It depends on person and music. It sometimes helps to listen to music while studying and...for some people, it's distracting. So I can't say they should or not.

It really depends on the person. Some students concentrate more while listening to music and others don't.

I guess it all depends on the individual. Personally, I can't stand music being on when I'm studying, because I can't focus properly on my study because my mind is singing along or tapping along to the music.

everone has their own method of studying. some sit at their desk to study, some prefer to walk while studying. a few find that speaking out loud helps them memorize better. and others find that turning on soothing music helps them concentrate better. its totally upto the student to decide which method he/she prefers.
