I had this same problem. I was raised Catholic, but very loosely. Religion did not play a major part in my life, but don't think I was ever really an atheist. I started looking into other religions such as different Christian denominations, Hinduism, Bhuddism, Zoroastrianism, Mormonism, Judaism, Sikhism, Shinto, Manicheism, Gnostic Christianity, Wicca and even simply deeper into my original Catholic upbringing. I found them all very interesting, and full of truths, but not complete. Then I looked into Islam and I converted after about a year or so of research and study of the religion. It just seemed to be what I had already believed all along, for as long as I can remember.
I'm not saying that you should necesarilly become a Muslim now, but look into it. I would look into other religions on a deeper level and study them to see what makes the most sense and find what you believe (note I say "believe" and "sense" in the same sentence, not "find very interesting"). Until you find something, if you don't come to your own conclusions, just believ in God and do whatyou think is right; there isn't really much room for error there.
I hope you find what you are looking for.

Why not believe in god without following a particular religion? If no religion seems right to you there is no reason why you should follow them. You shouldn't try to follow something that doesn't make sense to you. But you can still believe in god, just think about what YOU think god is really like and what you think is good in god's eyes and never stop exploring, learning and pondering on things in this world. You can let various religions inspire you, sort of take the best from each without accepting the bad stuff. I think doing this is way better than having other people's beliefs passed on to you through organized religion and being controlled by a religious institution that has it's own agenda going on. Believe in what seems right to you.

You're on the right track ~ hold fast to the truth. In your search take care to follow only the Word of God and not the word of man. If you haven't been raised in a religious home you may feel uncomfortable with prayer (a personal conversation with God). If so, pondering, meditating, reading, asking questions, and other forms of search will eventually lead you to the religion that is right for you. If you want a religion that embraces all peoples and religions of the world, try investigating the Baha'i Faith. A good starting point is www.bahai.org. May God guide you in your search.

Real religion means to learn how to love God. You should find the religious process which gives you most precise information and the best practical ways to achieve this most important goal in the human life. If you are sincere God will help you from within your heart.

I do not believe in any kind of religion but believe in God, that way I know the truth. I've never trusted anyone elses ideas about things so I determine what is right and wrong myself.

Research and see what calls out to you and makes the most sense. There's no law that says you have to actively participate as long as you hold the beliefs in your heart.
As far as your children go, teach them to study various religions and let them choose what they believe, or if they don't want to, that's fine too.

It is nice to see that you are conscious of your spiritual need, I can relate to your problem somewhat ,because I also was not raised very religiously, my parents never really went to Church, nor did they teach me to pray, but picking just any religion may not be the way to go about it, there are many many of them, to choose from as I'm sure you know, but I can tell you how to find the true religion that truly pleases the Almighty God Jehovah.
Many people will tell you that all roads lead to God,Yet is that really what the Bible says?Matthew7:13,14 tells us that there are only 2 roads one leading to life and one leading to destruction.
Jehovah gives everyone living the opportunity to gain everlasting life. To have eternal life in Paradise, however, we must worship God properly and live now in a way that is acceptable to him. Sadly many refuse to do so. True religion leads to everlasting life. False religion leads to destruction. Jehovah does not want any human to be destroyed, and that is why he is giving people everywhere an opportunity to learn about him.(2Peter3:9). Really, then, the way we worship God means either life or death for us.
How, then, can 'the road to life 'be found? Jesus said that the true religion would be evident in the lives of the people who practice it. "By their fruits you will recognise them' he said."Every good tree produces fine fruit."(Matthew7:16,17) In other words, those who practice true religion would be recognized by their beliefs and their conduct. Although they are not perfect, and they make mistakes, true worshipers as a group seek to do God's will. Lets consider six features that identify those who practice true religion.
1 God's servants base their teachings on the Bible. The Bible itself says: "All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, that the man and or woman of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work."(2Timothy3:16,17)
2.Those who practice true religion. worship only Jehovah and make his name known(Matthew4:10)
3. God's servants show genuine, unselfish love for one another(John13:35)
True Christians accept Jesus Christ as God's means of salvation.
4True worshipers are no part of the world, they are neutral regarding politics they are law abiding. Why? Because God's word commands them to be in subjection to the governmentalsuperior authorities(Romans13:1)(Acts5:29 ; Mark 12:17)
5.True followers preach that Gods kingdom is the only hope. Jesus fortold:"This good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all nations; and then the end will come."(Matthew24:14)
6.True worshipers follow the example that Jesus left for us when he came to earth.
How can you know the right way to worship God?You do not have tos tudy and compare teachings of all the many religions. You only need to learn what the Bible really teaches about true worship. To illustrate, in many lands there is a problem with counterfeit money. If you were given the job of picking out such false money, how would you go about it? By memorising every kind of counterfeit? No your time would be better spent if you studied real money. After you knew what real money looked like, you could recognise a counterfeit. Similarly when we learn how to identify the true religion, we can recognize those religions that are false.
