Thailand is cheap , great shopping and nice beaches. I liked the temples , the food and sight seeing . I thought it was hotter than I expected. And the polution is in some parts of Bangkok is pretty bad. Never seen so many stray dogs before either. Also thougth Thai english was quite hard to understand . I have traveled to many asian countries and Thai English was the hardest to get use to . Boat tours in Thailand can often be a boat trip from hell. Ours was and I have heard of many similar stories to mine since I got back. Those island tours have men that just have a boat licence and no other tour skills . The tour keeps going rain hail or shines. Be warned .

The light-hearted and fun loving people - the smiles, the tropics, the food, the fruit, the sea, temples, ceremonies, the jokes - the culture - - there is just a special feeling here.. the magic is not the magician pulling a rabbit out of his hat, it is the awe that you feel afterwards..

as to negatives, pollution and traffic, shoddy workmanship... and maybe the people as above who know so little but brand "every woman a P' and other cliches - we get some real jerks visiting but I would say 95% good..

The people I work with all seem mentally challenged. It's no wonder though if you consider the society. Nobody ever does anything that makes sense or results in a benefit. The girl processing insurance claims in the cubicle next to me has the same brain power as the old toothless woman selling pinapple in front of the office. Thank god this place is being invaded by foreigners because otherwise this country would really be in the shitter.

It totally depends on what neck of the country you visit.
People in the poor villages are totally more likely to take you for a ride if they think they can; but its simply because they are poorer than those in the more cosmopolitan districts! You still get whatever you have bought or hired at a BARGAIN price in comparison to visiting Spain, so don't moan! Unless you think that they are up for a bit of haggling!! :)

Positives: Easy to travel in (Good public transport, good food). Fairly cheap. Interesting historical sites.

Negatives: Too many tourists, escalating prices, Thais just aren't that friendly. Culture a little the same everywhere in the country.
Larger lout scene in BKK.

I think it's not a very good country to visit with your children, because prostituition is so LOUD there. Pros---- em, everything's very cheap, so you can shop to your heart's content. There's something called the chatuchak weekend market, which is AMAZING.. a must see. nothing like it anywhere else in the world.

positive;
goods + services cheap
weather warm
people nice + friendly
massage very good+ cheap + available everywhere
places are open late
pace of life is SLOW, laid back

negative:
a lot of people are VERY poor
for a lot of women/girls, prostitution is the most lucrative career option to help out their families
you will tend to get ripped off if you are a tourist

Easy going country and people. Country has a bad 'sex' image, which goes deep into her culture and traditions. Sad!
