I have friends who stay at Big Apple Hostel quite often and think it is just fine.

For Jazz on the Town - don't stay at the uptown location!! I used to babysit a block away and it was not a very nice area right around the hostel. Definitely only stay at the the downtown location!

Someone else told me they got a room for $90 a night at the Radio City Suites.
