If you reverse bias a zener and increase the voltage the diode will tunnel ( the voltage will be in the specs) when this happens the voltage across the zener stays fairly constant even with varying currents flowing thru it. This is why they are used in non-critical voltage references for things like power supplies, and low battery indicators.

well actually there is a little difference in between diode and zener diode .zener diodes have specified breakdown voltage while ideal diodes dont have.

The zener will have a constant voltage over it when you put it in "sper" ( that is when little current flows trhough it )

input characterstics same as pn diode
output characterstics after some increase in voltage due to breakdown(zener or avalanche) more current flows
