Whether or not traveling here by yourself is sad is entirely up to you. If you're adventurous and like travelling alone, there's nothing better. You can do and see all the things you want without anyone complaining that you're taking too long or their feet are tired or blah blah blah. (I go to Europe all the time by myself and love traveling alone).
As for New York at that time of year, well, it's one of the best times to come. There's so much to do and the city is in a great mood. My suggestion is come, enjoy yourself, and the heck with your friends (maybe you need more interesting friends btw).

You should definitely go on your own. If you've never travelled alone before then there's always the chance that you may feel sad no matter where you go. I don't see any reason why NYC in particular would make you sad. If you were thinking about being here on New Year's Eve, I wouldn't really recommend it unless you're able to locate someone you know. It can be a little weird if you don't have someone to hang out with.
Most of Manhattan is like Disneyland these days and there's nothing to really worry about. If you've been here before then you know not to look like a tourist. Block out the homeless people since they'll zero in on you if you're alone and look like you may not live here. Always consult the subway/street map before you go any where so you're not wondering around and walking blocks in the wrong direction in the cold. It sucks being lost when you're on your own.
I don't know how old you are but you shouldn't do it alone if your under 17. I don't know why I feel that way now but it just sounds right. I also don't know where you'd be coming from. Lots of teenagers from the tri-state area come to the city when they're younger than 17 but they do it often and usually with at least one friend.

Hey! I have a 20 yr old daughter who is currently an au pair in New York on Long Island. She has been getting around in New York city for 4 months mostly on her own. She's an avid sightseer and photographer and has even travelled on the subway at night by herself as well as mixing it up with all sorts at the West Indies Mardi Gras on her own. She doesn't try to do bars or partying though. She does have a suburban home to return to at night though. Give us a yell if you decide to go over.

New York is the safest big city in the USA. Manhattan is especially safe. Why wouldn't anyone want to go there?
If you can't have a good time in New York then you wouldn't have a decent time in any city.

Depends how old you are. If you are over 22 or so i say go for it. Just watch your back and you should be fine. Just have a good plan of what you want to see before you get there. And don't gawk at the tall buildings. Everyone will know you are from out of town :-)

I did it all by myself a couple of years ago - and I LOVED it!!! Be brave & go - you can wander the stores, you can take the ferry out to see Miss Liberty, travel to the top of the Empire State Building, & everything is all dressed up for Christmas!! Rockefeller Plaza is simply stunning - they set up the ice skating rink as soon as it gets chilly! Take the sightseeing bus & take it all in!! Go for it - I promise, you won't regret it!!!

I wouldn't go alone. That's dangerous. Well atleast it was in my case conisdering me, being 13 at the time, and my friend, 16, took off to see one of my friends in VT. Anyways NYC is a very dangerous city when I was there not too far from where we were there was a girl killed. I say it again I wouldn't go alone.

I love travelling on my own-more freedom that way.
Some people hate it or are scared or whatever?
But different people have different feelings about it, so you have to look within-are you someone who would like it or not?
