or which ones do I need to avoid?

Use eucaluptus, pine or most fruit trees. My budgies like mulberry branches because they can debark it. Some woods are too hard for debarking. Avoid any poisonous trees. The perch should be thick enough for the birds feet to fit about 3/4 arround. Use different shapes and size for comfort.

Budgies like all parrots and parakeets like to chew branches and will chew on the perches that you put in its cage. All my perches are from eucalyptus trees. For me this is mainly due to the ease of which I can replace them (though there are also many people who rave about the medicinal qualities of eucalyptus though Im not sure if that just applies to the leaves and new growth or the branches aswell). If you dont have access to gum trees then branchs from trees such as apple, sycamore and elder are non-toxic and are supposed to be suitable. You need to avoid all trees which are toxic such as yew and laburnum. If youre collecting branches from the wild then you also need to be aware of other factors such as diseases and parasites spread by wild birds. You should clean any branches throughly before you let your bird come in contact with it.
Happy hunting :)

Yes, but I would suggest getting the sand-paper like covering for them to sand down their claws.

Do not use a thorn bush. I have used all kinds of Hardwoods. I think Oak/Hickory look good.
