I have been "approved" for a credit card I applied for, but according to the approval letter, the issuing bank requires a photocopy of all 3 of the above items before my account can be opened. Additionally, a deadline of about 3 weeks is imposed. Is this legitimate? The letter says this is required by federal law. It seems like either a reasonable way to prevent fraudulent accounts, or just a clever scam. The credit card and circumstances of application otherwise seem reputable.

It depends, is it one of those bad crdit credit cards? I've got a Rewards 660 they required copy of utitlity bill (proof or residence) drivers license (proof of identity) and since I provided them with my home and cell # I had to send part of my cell bill. Also before they sent my card they called my home and cell #. Once I got my card I had to call from my home or my cell to activate. They can ask for what ever they want, it's up to you whether you give it to them or not. If it's a more reputable company they don't ask for these things. If you've got bad credit, they put you throught the ringer, although I have other cards for bad credit and they didn't ask for all of that. Google the company and see if there are any complaints from other card holders about them.

If I were you I would find out where the bank has a local branch near you and take your documentsand the bank letter to that branch and have them do the necessary as far as your application goes, that way you are protected from the risk of identity theft. Do not post anything like this in the mail.

I have never heard of a company requesting a copy of your soc. sec. card. or utility bill... first thing I would do is look them up in the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org) if they are on there then I would still call the company and speak to someone first... this information they are asking for is very sensitive, and to have an actual copy would make identity theft very possible for someone.

I agree with Stargazer that I would have to report this.

No this is clearly a scam...on any real bank cred card application there will be a place to put your social sec. number...do not ever send anyone copies of these documents...I have many credit cards ...this is a scam...you should report this to some sort of govt. agency..

Absolutely not..
See if they'll accept a letter that must be signed for.. this will cost you about $8.00. If they won't they aren't legitimate, and you have save yourself a world of hurt..

It's a scam.
If anyone had all of the above mentioned documents, they would essentially have your entire life in their hands.
DON"T DO IT!
