Good for you being such a concerned father!!! I would say the single most important thing in raising a child is to give them confidence and self-esteem. So many problems in adulthood are caused by low self-esteem--drug/alcohol addictions, eating disorders, problems relating to others, problems setting and following through goals--I could go on and on, but you get the idea. Make sure you give your child many chances to succeed. Encourage him. Let him know you'll be there for him no matter what and that you love him no matter what.

But don't make the mistake that so many parents these days make. Like you said, he has to be able to face this world bravely. Make sure you also give him responsibility all throuhout his life. When he's 2, show him how to put away his toys. When he's 4 or 5, give him a simple chore to do every day. When he's 16, make sure he has a job and has to buy some things he wants with his own money. Make him do his best in school. These are the tools that will allow him to enter the world prepared.

And if you want him to feel successful and happy, I would say you have to also show him how to have a passion. Share your own passions for starters. As he gets older, give him many opportunities to find his own passion. Try sports. Take him fishing. Let a family member take him to work for a day. Whatever you can.

Hope this helps a little.

Teach him right from wrong, yes and no. Let him explore, present many new challenges, and many different types of people. You also can ask at the library for some good books you can read to him. Your son-needs plenty of reading- to get far in the work-world. Aim high- DAD! Not much heavy-metal music, rap, and lots of cartoons. Think of what the "successfull people have achieved- and how they got their) GO GO GO

spend a lot of time with him, make sure media has a less of an influence on him as he is growing, take him to parks where he can make new friends, read to him. and leave the rest for him to learn even if he does mistakes. but most of all just be there for him when ever he needs you, i already think your a great dad, to be so concerned form this early stage of his development.

Are you serious? Where is your parental instincts?
You'd better read literature on the topic then ask kids sitting here.
