A relay is simply a controlled switch. A coil of wire can be energized within the relay to cause switch contacts to open or close. This can be done with very little power or energy, but the relay could switch hundreds of volts with tens of amps flowing.
A relay has very high isolation between the voltage benig switched and the coil that energizes the relay:

-----The electrical / electronic relay allows you to control a large signal with a small one, or vice versa. It also allows you to keep the big signal separate from the small one. I do not think it is called a relay, but if you use air pressure in a valve to control the flow of water in a pipe, you are doing the same thing. ---Jim
