Or would it take too much time money and supplies to build something like that in space?

Its a matter of perspective, right now no. But later on, I'm sure it would be. What we need is a space elevator to make supplies cheap to transport, and we would need many people and robots to construct it. But in the film, it was powered by fusion, so in order to power something that massive, we would need something like that to power it.

I'm sure it would be, once we were comfortable in space. Obviously, it would take large amounts of material and energy. With plentiful solar power and mining asteroids, why not? It would take time. Look at how long it takes to build put up a large structure on the ground. There would be aspects that would be easier in space, but other aspects that would make it more difficult.

But if you wanted to remove a troublesome population, why blow up the planet? Just poison the atmosphere. Even if a few thousands survived in shelters it wouldn't make much difference. It would take them hundreds of years to get back to where they were. Or you could just polish off the survivors at your leisure.

Or you can just shoot whole bunch of nuclear missiles at a planet. I'm sure we got enough to blow away small planet like Mars or Earth. Why spend extra dough when we got enough fire power now to do what death star does?

-----A huge space ship can be done; we can do it now if we wanted to spend the huge amount of money. But a faster-than-light drive? A weapon than can destroy a planet? If those things are ever possible, they are far in the future; hundreds of years at least. -----Jim
