My friends and my mom always tell me I need to eat more and that I am too skinny. I am 5'6" and weigh 96lbs. The only people who don't rag on me are my gymnastic coachs. They say I am perfect, but EVERYONE else makes jokes and some random woman yesterday gave me five dollars and told me to eat something. It is really bothering me. I need to be thin to do all the stuff i do in level 5 gymnastics. So what do you guys think. Should I just tell everyone to *f* off or am I too thin?

If you do level 5 gymnastics I don't envision you as being a skin and bones. You must be in great shape so I don't think you should worry about it. Plus, you have to eat a lot to have enough energy to do what you do. You just burn it off while doing your flips and stuff. I don't think any guy would have a problem with dating a 5'6 , 96lbs gymnast.

You need to check with your doc to see if they feel you have enough body mass. You didn't mention if the doc thought you were to thin when you had your last physical. As tall as you are your weight sounds awfully low but only a doctor (not your coach or your mom or anyone else) can tell you for sure if you are to thin or not. Just be aware that being to thin can cause lots of problems like delayed periods, increased risk of osteoporosis and trouble getting pregnant etc so to find out for sure make an appointment with your doc and get checked out.

Whehter you are underweight or not actually depends on your age. If you are in your early teens, you may well be fine.

You really need to have your body fat percentage checked. If it is less than 15% or less, then you need to be careful and if it is less than 10%-12%, this is dangerously low. I'm guessing you just have a small frame and high metabolism and will soon fill out in the next few years. HTH.

Hey Misty,

I understand, but I was in gymnastics, and 96 pounds is not a good weight unless you are in the few beginner levels.

Gymnasts need muscle more than anything, and 96 pounds doesn't hold enough muscle and not enough for 5'6. I mean, unless you are in the 5th grade, it's not the healthiest weight to have. You need to be in shape in gymnastics, not skin and bones.

I do think you should get food on you, now, and the doctor that your mom tool you to is most likely the one who is right, but I'd say get a third opinion.

Good luck, Hun. Don't starve yourself for anything, take it from me, who has been in that place of needing help, don't do this, or it will soon be too late.

I had a look at a kid's health website to calculate your BMI - I assumed you were about 16, and it says your BMI is 15.5 which is most definitely too low. The healthy weight range for you if you are about 16 is 106 - 156 pounds. The link to that site is below.

I think it would be worth you seeing a doctor or nutrionist and talking about your health. Being too thin can be really dangerous. It puts strain on your heart and can affect fertility... is gymnastics really worth that?

When I was young I was 5'9" and 115 and I was skinny. So yes you are skinny at 5'6" and 96.

You are definitely too thin. Considering you are a gymnast you have more muscle which ways more than fat. Considering that and the fact that you only weight 96 pounds.....you truly are too thin and could be harming your health.

You are underweight for your height you can look it up if you want. If you are small framed you are about 24lbs or so underweight. if you are medium or large framed then you are more than that. If your doctor says you are healthy and you aren't anorexic or anything then keep doing your thing.

If you have to ask...then you should really try to understand about what it really means to have a good self image. Seeing yourself through you own eyes instead of other peoples eyes is probably a good place to start.
