In my opinion, he is afraid.
Shi'itism is a beautiful and very traditionally based focus of Islam.
I deeply extend my respect to the belief and to its interpretations of the Koran and the words of God.
At the same time, there are incongruencies in the modern world and in traditional belief. It is hard to exist in a world of cell phones, rap and NBA Jams and also remain a good Shi'ite, I believe.
Not unless you see God in a modern sense.
I think in the big picture, Grand Ayatollah Sustani forgot something basic to the belief of Shi'ite faith: God is merciful and compassionate and he will forgive the mistakes of man because we don't and can't understand him well.
Inshallah, there is nothing more to his statement.
In the end though, I am not the best judge for such things. Only God can be.
