A syndrome hard to treat. What's your family history? Renal hypertension is also a problem to treat. Walk a lot to bring it down. Learn to breathe properly also.

First I think you have your numbers backwards. The first number called the systolic pressure, the pressure the heart puts out when pumping blood to the lungs and beyond. The diastolic pressure, the second number, is the amount of pressure when the blood is returning to the heart. Although a 179 is considered hypertensive, the bottom number or the diastolic that you should be worried about.

Whatever type of hypertension you have (high blood pressure) it is extremely dangerous. It's like putting too much air in a tire. Your doctor said it's a wonder you are still alive and he might be right. Have health care professionals gone through all the "tried and true" methods of medicines (ie diuretics, beta blockers, etc)? Have you considered participating in clinical trials? Many hospitals and organizations in cities all over the country have these studies. You get free medical care (for the disease being addressed), sometimes get compensated for your time. Gas mileage might also be granted. The idea behind these studies is to expedite research and development of treatment of diseases and the pharmaceuticals and other methods which are successful.

You might consider alternative treatments such as accupuncture or hypnosis. There are herbs and vitamins that won't be the cure all but could very well assist in the treatment. However, you should check with your doctor prior to taking herbal remedies. You don't know what might conflict with your current medicines.

By the way, most patients say they feel fine with high blood pressure. That's why its called the silent killer.

I wish you the best of luck!
