Haven't seen desperate housewives, but if the pic is of 2 older looking shlubs, with long faces, and the old fella has a pitch fork, and I think there is a farmhouse in nthe backround, then it's American Gothic. They look a couple of sad sacks!!

Everyone else is correct - it is 'American Gothic' by Grant Wood. I submitted an assignment towards my degree this year on this painting and it really is fascinating is you look into how the perception of it has changed over the years. You might be interested to know that was painted in 1930 following the Wall Street Crash and in the midst of depression, in a deliberately antiquated style. The house was real and still stands in Eldon, Iowa - somewhat of a tourist attraction now. The man was modelled on Grant Woods' family dentist (Dr. B.H. McKeeby) who did actually have a long, gaunt face as pictured. However the woman was modelled on Grant Woods' sister Nan Wood, and he slimmed down her much rounder face to match the appearence of the man. The exists some difference of opinion over whether the couple are man and wife, or father and daughter. From my research, I believe them to be the latter, but anyone is welcome to draw their own conclusions! The painting does indeed feature on the titles of Desperate Housewives, along with other iconic females who have the right to feel resentful about their predicament and who have possibly been wronged by the men in their lives!

It's called American Gothic and it's by Grant Wood. It can be found I think in The Art Institute of Chicago and is an example of regionalism.
