DVD and VCD are on different Medias though they both look alike. VCD is also known as Video CD, comes in three popular versions VCD 1.0, VCD 1.1 and VCD 2. Most DVD players play VCDs also, and are 1.0 and 1.1 compatible. Newer DVD players are also compatible with VCD 2.0 . You can check your DVD players specs for playable media. In the past, stand alone VCD players/recorders were available. They were popular because of price difference between CD and DVD. Now, inclination is towards DVD because price gap shrank and DVD offers better quality.

a VCD is Video Compact Disc.
a DVD is Digital Video Disc.
dvd's have much more space than a vcd. it is due to fact that the data is compressed more and dvd is a little different in it's structure.

a vcd=video compact disc, in simply a video put on a cd that you can view on your computer, dvd=digital video disc, you need a dvd player or a computer that plays dvds. vcds have been around longer, i even have a few. but i think you can fit more on a dvd then on a vcd
