I think it's just a very passionate way of communicating your feelings without getting down and dirty. I love kissing. You can tell someone so much about the way you feel for them through a kiss without ever having to speak.

in ancient times , cave times, the mother chewed up food into a mush and shoved it into the babys mouth with her tongue, they would also do this for adults that were ill, since our lips and tongue are full of sense receptors, it also felt good, and became an extension of ones caring even if feeding was not part of it. as time went on then the kissing became a fairly innocent entry to sexuality.
