Here in Philadelphia, in the spring, we have a cherry blossom viewing festival. Is it disrespectful for my American friends and I to dress in kimono for the occasion?

no way, it's not disrespectful at all. america is all about different backgrounds and ethnicities coming together to live in one country - that's why we're called a melting pot! so i say, kimono away! hey that rhymed...

Here're my two cents:

The American cultural dress is blue jeans.

Now, if you want to wear kimono, more power to you, but I will warn you: what with all the bizarre undergarments needed (including the under-kimono, of course) kimono is extremely uncomfortable; wearing Western undergarments spoils the form and fit of the garment, so you'll need the chest flattener, the silk pads that look like old fashioned sanitary napkins to fill in the waist, and all the binding plates and those silk sashes to tie everything down, and all topped off by the alligator clip thing that goes under the kimono back from sleeve to sleeve...

I've worn kimono before, in Japan. I have never been so glad to get out of a garment before or since. And, that includes those fuscia 4-inch heels I used to have.

In short, rather than go through that misery again, I'd splurge on a gorgeous new pair of boot-cut jeans with a snappy top in springtime colors and call me dressed.

Happy Hana-mi ("Flower Viewing")!

Nope. I lived in Asia for two years and am not Asian but I wear their cultural clothes even still now that I am back in the US. I just like it and it feels more comfortable to me. America is very diverse and people are actually impressed by other who have a little culture about themselves.

No, as long as you are honoring the Japanese, not disrespecting them. Just act nice while you are in costume, and people will be accepting of you in the costume..I agree with Baza, Americans are known the world over for their tacky clothing choices. Nice that you want to be tasteful, and not wear one of the traditional american costumes of jeans and tennies and T-shirt, or Hawaiian shirt, bermuda shorts, black socks, ugly sandals, and a camera.
Have fun!

I don't think so. But I think the cultural garb for America is jeans, a T-shirt and tennis shoes.

No. America is made up of many different cultures. We are all essentially immigrants, unless you are native American. Show the spirit any way you can!

Yes it is
Have you ever seen fat Americans on holiday in Hawaiian tee shirts and shorts.
Especially when holidaying in the UK
They should be made to wear those long bathrobe things and veils.

no, it is a sign of respect as long as you behave in a respectful manner. I had the same question about wearing military patches as long as it is done with respect it is okay.
