everyone does it in private. and it doesn't involve private areas. so why can't we do it in public without getting dirty looks.

There are a lot of things that everyone does in private that are not acceptable in public, this being one.Most forms of personal grooming should be kept private.

Because it is considered socially inappropriate and it is a form of grooming which should strictly be done in private. You don't see people combing their hair or applying deodarant in public do you? Well, the same thing goes for nose picking. Besides, nose picking is usually associated with germs, filth and dirt, which is just disgusting. Also, when you pick your nose, You usually have a nasty boogey stuck on your fingers and that's just absolutely disgusting and gross. People tend to associate you with that green sticky thing which comes out of your nose.
It is also the social norm to not pick your nose in public. Everybody agrees that it is not polite and unrefined. That's just the way it is and that's just a basic thing taught to little children so they fit into society.
But social norms and trends do change, and one day, nose picking in public may become acceptable and even normal (I don't think I look forward to that day). However, until that day comes, I believe we should all refrain form picking our nose in public and instead find a secluded spot or a washroom where you can do it privately. And don't forget to wash your hands afterward!

It must be because when you pick it, you almost always take a booger out of it. I think it would be a bit more acceptable if it were only scratching. When you think about it though, it isn't acceptable to scratch any of your "private areas" (armpit, butt, etc.) in public. I don't know how me picking my nose affects someone I don't even know, but I guess they are just rules so that everyone thinks that everyone else is clean.

Just because you do it in private doesn't mean its proper and acceptable to do it in public. It's unhygienic. Think about all the things you do in private. I have seen people picking their nose in public and it's just kind of gross, why not blow into a Kleenex... And this is also along the lines of men constantly "re-arranging" themselves, just something that should be spared from the public eye.

why is it ok to be topless in france, but in america we laugh and "kid" about the fact of someone being nude.
Fact is we Americans are too immature to accept nudity as well as other social inconjuntions. Picking of the nose is one of these things. If someone does pick their nose we laugh and make fun. I have learned to not care what a single fellow american thinks of me as a person for some of my actions in public.
I pick my nose in public and am proud of it. I do try wash or sanitize my hands after done picking, but still, i pick it. If immature americans can't take watching self cleansing in public then they shouldn't watch it or make fun of it.

Nothing wrong with picking your nose. It's the fear everybody feels waiting for the thing you are going to pull out that is the problem. If you know that your nose is absolutely clean, surprise them but pulling out a completely clean fingure. Can you do that?

because once u picked it and the boogey is out the others will be obbsessed with the idea that where r u going to put it!! the are worried about themselves and the place they are sitting uknow!!!11

haha, figures a man would ask this, you want a good reason to pick ur nose in public, huh?? lol, anyway, idk why it is gross and what made it gross, but reality says that it IS gross. So deal with it and pick ur nose where no one can see you or not at all.

It's a cultural no- no, first of all. Secondly, think of all the things you touch in a day, then you would essentially be placing that bacteria "inside" your nose.
