The simple answer it YES, the reason is that it oxidises. That is, exposure to oxygen turns the wine bad. The first thing you'll notice is that it loses the fresh flavor it had when first opened, the flavor dulls then it slowly gets unpleasant.
If you stick a cork back in the neck it will keep longer, but still decline as there is now oxygen in the wine bottle.
It won't kill you to drink it, but wine should be pleasurable and if it doesn't taste good, pour it away.
Winde doesn't keep good for long once opened.

Without the cork in the bottle, the wine begins to oxidize, which is the process of the wine mixing with oxygen in the air. A small amount of oxidation can be a good thing, like when you decant a wine or leave a bottle of red open for a short while before pouring. If the bottle was open in the fridge, for a short period of time (a few hours, or at most overnight) then it won't be optimal, but might be ok. Just take a small taste of it, and if it tastes ok, it is ok. Hope this helps!
P.S. If you only *just now* put the bottle in the fridge, you'd be much better off to at least "cap" the bottle with plastic wrap.

They make some pretty cool wine closures now. Try Zyliss website. I have a stainless steel one with rubber gasket. I replace all my natural corks after opening with one of these and pop the wine in the fridge. Ideally the wine should be consumed in the next few days.
Oxygen is the wine's enemy. If you can transfer to a smaller bottle like a half bottle, 375ml, that would be best. The less air contact the better.

it becomes sour and eventually turns into a vinegar like drink.
Theoretically you should drink the whole bottle within a few hours after opening. Wine will lose body and flavor. To an untrained drinker, it seems all the same but once you start drinking different kinds, you'll know the difference very quickly.
