I have dark brown hair and decided to dye it an auburn red. It's a 28 day wash out dye because I'm not quite ready for permanent stuff. The directions said to do the roots then wait 5 minutes, then do the rest and wait 5 minutes after that to rinse it through until the water is clear. I blew dry it and it has a slight tint to it but it's not the color that's on the box. I know it won't be exact but it's not even close. I didn't use all the dye, so should I redo it? Any advice!

Tricky, tricky.
I dye my hair quite often so I think I can help.
Whether or not it's permanent dye it can still damage your hair. You aren't going to get the results you want from a washout. The dye isn't as intense so the color won't be either.
So if you want nice color go for the permanent, but if you're still a little apprehensive about it wait two weeks before dying again and get yourself an intensive conditioner. Be careful going from brown to red. It was my first dye. It can come out as orange. Choose your color carefully, a darker red usually looks nicer.
Hope I helped!

They put the color on hair that has no color pigment in it. That's why it never turns out the color you want.

Go to a professional. You can talk over what you want and they even make up formula's just for you. At least I do. Most will. Just be careful where you go. Ask for a consultation first, see if they charge for this, some do and some don't. It doesn't mean anything if they do or don't. Just more money for you. Make sure you get the time of day from the stylist as some are prima donna's and you don't want that. Keep looking until you find someone you know is on the same page as you.

stylist here, dark brown hair will not take on much cast from a light colored dye without ammonia. your hair already has the tones that you are trying to put in. unfortunately you wont get much results with direct dyes like you are using. permanent or semipermanent(which contains ammonia) is the only way i know of that will get you a noticeable difference. for this i would recomend going to a professional you trust and just GO FOR IT GIRL!

I think you should just keep it exactly the way it is. If it's cute, just leave it, don't mess with it. Plus, you don't want to kill your hair.
