"Our better angels" stands for our conscience, which we sometimes do not listen to when we want to do something shady. Then, the angels' brightness is eclipsed - our conscience will no longer be as sensitive as it was.

The "better angels" stand for the good that we all have the potential to do. Good shines brightly. However, we can let what we want get in the way of doing the right thing. For instance, we can give some of our money to help feed the poor or to some other charity or we can spend our money on a bigger, better t.v., car, house, etc. When we give in to our own wants too often instead taking care of the needs of others, the potential good is hidden by the darkness of giving in to ones own desires because although the good is still there waiting to come out, only the selfishness can be seen.

I take it to mean that our own desires are usually selfish and self serving. They are many, though, and cast shadows, ( one cant seem to give way.) to darken the brighter reality, which is the greater good. In a nut shell, What the Almighty has planned for us, what the universe wants for us, and our hearts desire, are all the same thing. Don't trade that in for what it is you want most now.

The shadows of our own desires: our wants, our craves, our lusts our musts...

better angels: Our conciensce, our soul...our inherent being

thus their brightness is eclipsed: We humans strive to be good...but sometimes it's tough, cause our inherent nature which is good and pure gets lost amongst the illusions of the world

I'm a fairly cynical kind of guy, and I think this is ultimately saying that some of our base thoughts and desires are less than positive, and depending upon the strength of these desires, we may well act upon them. I believe that it is a matter of justification: if I can justify the act in my mind, it doesn't matter good or bad, it will be done.

I think it means that we often want what's bad for us. We desire material things, comfort, unhealthy foods, love people who hurt us, etc. That distracts us from seeing the full glory and beauty of the world. Basically, most of us know that we often make bad choices but we do it anyway.

the desires one truly may have, tho not in 'forefront',rather a bit 'hidden',.. may indeed have a 'darkness' to them, and/or in someway be considered
detrimental are foresaken by what is sougtht to be not that in darkness ,.. cannnot be truly brougtht into there own remarkable light, thus remain 'hidden' ,, in the shadows of our conscious

i take it to mean that we hold ourselves back from something better. we are so consumed with ourselves that we throw a shadow on our future. the more we hold ourselves back with our own detrimental desires, the more we fail to see how much better our lives could be.
