I was thinking about doing something to do with the NBA's new ball, and the no tolerance rule.

Both of your thoughts are good. The steroid situation (performance enhancing drugs) is very timely and will be a good, topical subject for some time. You might try arguing why steroids SHOULD be allowed! That would be very different from most viewpoints and give you "brownie points". I also like the subject of sportsmanship-- especially "end zone celebrations" and dancing. Also very topical is the use (?misuse?) of instant replay. I thought it added a lot to the recent US OPEN tennis tournament. But in SEC football, the referees have not done well with it!

Try doing something about the age restrictions on some sports. I think people should be 21 to play professional sports.
