I have a pittbull. He's too sweet to be a good watch dog but the funny thing is people's ignorance about them make them fear him anyway. You wouldn't believe how many people move out of the way when I walk him because they're scared of him. They always ask if he's mean of if he bites. It's funny how it really doesn't matter if the dog would ever attack - people see the breed and that's all that's needed.
I've never owned a Rottweiler before. I think they might be better watch dogs as far as barking and acting mean when someone they don't know comes over. Personally I'd take a pitt over a rotty but that's just me. I've seen too many Rotties that look act mean - I like a sweet dog.
Honestly, my advice is to go with the type of dog you like best. Make that your primary concern. Either one can be a great dog if you raise them right (like anything). Either of those breeds will make people think twice even if they're ultra sweet so dont worry about which will be a better watch dog.

We have 2 Pitts..Jesse (as in jesse james the biker) is a 2yr. old Brenal male & Jade is a 5 month old Blue Brendal female. I vote for the pit. A pit will become a part of your family. They are very human freindly & love kids. We also have 3 kids..ages 7, 7, & 6. Our pitts let them roll around on the floor with them....my son loves to wrestle with them.
I wanted to get a rott for a long time and ended up falling in love with a pitt and then a year and a half later we got another one.
So i dont really know what it is like to have a rott. I just know what a pit is like. They are sweet, charming dogs that are more like a human than anything....well, at least ours are maybe because they are so spoiled!!! They are hardheaded and a little stubborn but that's just their personality. Just raise your voice and that's all it takes....they give you their "im sorry" face.
A pitt will always be right by your side. I feel like they are protecting me. I'll say... jesse..."what's that" in a whisper and if he senses that i am scared he will run out the doggy door and check the yard. They are VERY protective!
Just wanted to share with you a little insight into owning a pit...They are sweet dogs that will beg for your attention and approval. Good Luck!!!

The American Pit Bull Terrier is not naturally a guard dog. They can be dog aggressive, but are NOT human aggressive unless they are specifically trained to be. They can make wonderful pets if they are bred properly and in the hands of a capable owner, but if you're looking for a "protector" this is probably not the way to go... unless you're hoping the dog licks an intruder to death.
A rottie is better suited to being a guard dog, but also must be very carefully trained to be such. This is also a very large and very strong dog, which brings up an entirely different situation - they can be extremely hard to handle and control. They can also make excellent family dogs.
Neither breed should be handled by a novice dog owner.

I like both breeds.. but Pit Bulls have my heart. I own one and he is hands down the best dog I have ever owned. Pit Bulls have a bad rap but really good family dogs... you just have to be responsible! Responsible owners are the key to turning around the bad rap they have. Pits can be dog aggressive but that is not the same thing as human aggressive. Pit Bulls are loyal, fun loving, and have a zest for life. Pit Bulls do not make good guard dogs because they are so friendly to strangers (that is why they are one of the most stolen dogs in this country) However Pits do make good watch dogs because they are very attentive to there home and they will certainly let you know if someone is approaching your house... but it is when that person comes in the house they melt like butter.
Pit Bull would be my choice... but it is up to you. It all really depends on your lifestyle. Pits are high energy dogs... so if you have a slow paced lifestyle then you might want to re-think it. Go to these sites for more info on Pits

as a rottweiler owner, I Am obviously going to say get the rottie. Mine is about 5 months old.. I have pics of him on my 360 if you want to see. He is the smartest, most loyal pup ever. He obeys all commands: sit, stay, come, heel, down , off, leave it, wait here. Just today I taught him to ring a bell when he needs to use the bathroom and I also taught him how to turn on a fan by command. He is very in tune to my feelings and what is going on. If I am upset he will stick right by me and snuggle up to my feet. When someone walks into my house he lets out two loud barks and I say thanks bud and then he knows its OK and he can relax. this is a breed that loves to be a part of the family and needs daily training, but he is the most rewarding thing I could ever ask for. Feel free to message me if you have any other questions.

The worst thing I can say about a Rott is that I have encounter more than a couple that were dumb as a box of rocks. But that really has to do with the owner/trainer. However, I have seen Pitts turn on their owner. My nephew was also attached my a Pitt that jumped the fence and attacked him and took a ball and jumped back into his own yard. Thankfully, the dog was only after the ball or the end result could have been much, much worse than the scars covering my nephew's face. Go with the Rott. I think they are certainly more trustworthy dogs.

Both have the "loyal and protective" quality you're looking for. However, Rottweilers make for better guard dogs. They've been bred to guard. Pit bulls have been bred to fight other dogs, therefore they're more animal aggressive than they are human aggressive. Go with a rottweiler if you want a loyal guard dog. Go with a pit bull if you want a loving, human-friendly dog. I have 5 pit bulls myself.

The pit bull. We have one and we have owned different breeds of dogs. Do NOT believe all of the cruel and ugly myths regarding pits. Unless you have raised one from a puppy and properly-there is no better dog. They love to snuggle, play, do good for their owner and they are pretty funny. They are nosy and will follow you around to every room. They do not have to be taught to protect their home-if it stays inside. As they get older instinct will kick in and they just know. Please read up on them before getting one(if you decide on the "snuggle bear")and everything in the books is true about them. Everyone that sees him and hangs out with us for a while always says, "he's just a big baby." Good luck!

Rottweiler is going to be the most protective, as they have been bred for literally thousands of years for that work..Pits have been bred to be friendly, and they are apt to lick a burglar to death..
However, pits are dog aggressive, and Rotts are somewhat same sex aggressive, if not socialized properly..
for what you want, I believe a Rottweiler is the right dog for you.. Just really study up about them, and know what you are getting and how to train them before you bring one home..

You need to do some research because those two are not the only protective breeds, they just get the most publicity because they kill people. If you have kids anywhere around your house, I suggest neither. Pitbulls have been bred to be fighters and nothing else. They can turn on you in a snap. Rotts are great dogs, but they play too rough to be around kids (one knocked my little brother over and rolled him across the yard). They can also turn if not trained properly. If you have children in or near your house, find a different breed. I had a lab mix that was a wonderful protector. Whatever you decide, do research and find a dog that fits your needs. Also, there's plenty of dogs at the humane society that can love and protect you.
