I'm sure most of you reading this have heard that song by Sheryl Crow.

However, I've heard that term before, and I was wondering where it came from, and what it's real significance is. I know in many cases, these phrases are adopted from something else and given a new meaning over time.

I'm thinking something surgery related? As in the first cut needing to be the deepest, and the psychological depth to it (for the surgeon).

"The First Cut is the Deepest" is a 1967 song written by Cat Stevens. It has become a hit song for four different artists; the renditions by Rod Stewart in 1976 and Sheryl Crow in 2003 are the most widely known.

It refers to a psychological concept not physical it means the first time that u r hurt by sb or sth is unforgetable it could be sth related to business, love or family and so forth .

The Sheryl Crow song is actually a cover of a Cat Stevens song. Cat Stevens was a fairly popular singer at one time but denounced his music when he became a Muslim.
I don't think if you were a surgeon the first cut would be the deepest because you would want to make sure that you didn't cut too deep. Thus perhaps the first cut would smaller to check out the situation before a series of deeper cuts...?
The saying likely comes from the Cat Stevens song though.

Rod Stewart sings this song "First Cut Is The Deepest" at Royal Albert Hall in London. He has his band & other great musicians that he sings with. If you hear him sing this, it will tell you a story & then - you'll get it. His friend Ron Wood, of the Stones was there also, playing !
He either co-wrote it or wrote it himself. I'm not sure. It's a song about feelings, not surgery.
