VERY simple...
First...obey all traffic laws.
Second....Drive defensively...meaning that you should drive as if you are the only one out there that knows how to drive properly. If you see another driver approaching a stop sign, assume that he won't stop, and you be ready to stop, in order to avoid an accident. I remember, a few years ago, driving with my 18 year old daughter in the car. I was stopped at a red light. The light turned green and I waited a few seconds before moving, because there was a car approaching the intersection, to my left. My daughter asked why I didn't go immediately. No sooner had she finished the question that the car blew through the red light. I told her that this was the reason. She retorted that I would have been in the right, to which I replied that she could put that on my tombstone...."HE WAS NOT AT FAULT FOR THIS ACCIDENT".
She learnt a valuable lesson there.

I have been driving since 1968 and driven most of Canada and half of USA and never had an accident and my driving is usually fast , but what I do is first of all be always alert of the road conditions and traffic , constant check the rear view mirror and now all the time where all the cars are around you back and sides , be aware of the car ahead of the car you are following and never tail gate always keep the safety zone of about 3-4 cars behind depending of the speed , higher speeds more space , and when you come to a red light always stop about a car length behind , if some one hits you from behind you wont be banging the one in
front and also you can easily move out if the car in front has problems . But basically is constant awareness of the cars around you and go with the flow.

Be alert and hope the other driver drives defensively like you.
I used to work for a Suzuki/Subaru dealer and I loved to drive, I worked in service and sales at different car dealerships and have had driving and crash courses(we would crash cars on purpose to see how safe they were) on many different makes. Subaru's are probably the safest cars out there. I was at work one day and went to run an errand for the service department. I wanted to take the Subaru service car. I got stuck taking the Suzuki. I got into a small car accident but the way the car reacted to the accident, well I am now unemployable because of the pain I am in. I have been disabled by this small accident. Had I been driving a Subaru I would still be working today. Why? Subaru has passive as well as active safety features, built better to absorb impacts and better handling. Thanks to the Suzuki I am in constant pain.
In answer to your question, yes they are okay cars they look good and if mmaintained properly they can last, but all cars can if they are m,aintained. Are they safe NO!
Buy a Subaru, Honda or Toyota

You're right. Accidents happen when you least expect them. Be courteous to other road users and don't throw your common sense out the window when you get behind the wheel. A learned instructor once told me to ride or drive like everyone else is trying to kill you. Stay safe.

2)no eating while driving.
3)keep a safe breaking distance between you and the vehicle ahead of you.
4)Do not focus on one point. Search and scan the road ahead of you.
