Windows Movie Maker also allows you to save the movie in an AVI format albiet in uncompressed format.
After you compile and select "Make Movie" from the menu, the second/third screen will say, "Move Setting". You should select "Other settings" and use the drop down and select DV-AVI(NTSC) after which you should be able to make AVI movie file.
Once this is done, use some video compressor softwares like TMPGEnc and using DivX Codec you can encode that AVI file into a compressed, small size Video File.
Hope this helps. Feel free to message me incase you have any doubts.

I normally do not work with wmv files because you lose video quality why not buy a good piece of software like ulead moviefactory or cyberlink power director, it has free trial with ability to add so many transitions and texts to your video plus you can convert to dvd.
